A Brief History of French Doors
For those unfamiliar, French doors first appeared in France during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were designed with large glass panes that acted as both windows and doors, creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. That concept still appeals to homeowners today, but at Rockdoor, we’ve developed it further to combine traditional style with modern performance.
ENHANCED SECURITY WITH PREMIUM LOCKING SYSTEM
French doors are often thought of as less secure due to their extended glass design. Our design completely changes that perception. Each set of Rockdoor French doors features a unique locking system that combines steel shoot bolts (that slide vertically into the door frame), zinc hooks and premium mechanical locks (cylinders operated by a key), all working together to keep homes safe.
The aluminium-reinforced 360° inner frames provide a ring of strength and additional protection against forced entry. This clever construction keeps all the locking points firmly in place, and combined with hinge bolts, it makes it extremely difficult for intruders to force the doors apart.
For outward-opening French doors, the hinges are designed with security in mind. They feature hinge pins that can only be removed when the doors are open. To further protect against air gaps, a continuous centre seal bridges the space between the doors and the frame, ensuring insulation.
These innovations mean Rockdoor French doors are not only strong but were also the first in the industry to achieve Secured by Design accreditation, the police initiative for home security.

Traditionally, glass-heavy doors raised concerns about heat loss, but our approach ensures French doors don’t come at the expense of energy performance. Our S-Glaze technology locks the glass directly into the frame, preventing draughts and cold spots, while PU foam insulation fills gaps within the door to further improve thermal efficiency. These details mean Rockdoor French doors can achieve some of the best Door Set Energy Ratings available in the industry, offering homeowners both comfort and lower energy bills.
