What’s changed with the new APECS AP V3 cylinder?

The new AP V3 cylinder introduces several improvements over the previous cylinder. Here’s a quick comparison to help you see what’s different.

Five keys included as standard

One of the most noticeable changes is the number of keys supplied. With the new APECS AP V3, every Rockdoor composite door will come with five metal keys as standard.

That gives you more flexibility from the outset, whether you need keys for family members or simply want to keep a spare somewhere safe.

The redesigned key features a Snake-Rail dimple design and a unique key number linked to the cylinder fitted to your door. Its grip is 30% larger than that of the previous key, making it more comfortable to hold and easier to turn.

The operation of the cylinder itself is also particularly smooth, giving a premium feel every time you lock or unlock your door.

Key Secure: more control over replacement keys

Having spare keys is useful, but it's also important to know who can obtain additional copies.

The APECS AP V3 offers an optional service called Key Secure, which gives homeowners greater control over replacement key orders.

After registering through the QR code supplied with the keys, your key orders are linked to a single homeowner account. Orders are then verified using a one-time passcode sent to your registered phone number or email address.

This adds an extra layer of control, helping prevent additional keys from being ordered without the registered account holder's knowledge or authorisation.

If you move home, Key Secure registration does not transfer automatically to the new occupant. Having a new cylinder fitted is one way for the new homeowner to regain control over access and ensure they know who holds the keys.

Enhanced security for greater peace of mind

A good locking cylinder plays an important role in the overall security of your door. The APECS AP V3 brings additional reassurance through its recognised security certifications.

The cylinder has also achieved TS007-1:2024 3 Star, BSI Kitemark and Sold Secure Diamond SS312:2024 certification. It is also fully freeze-test compliant and has been independently tested against the latest security requirements of PAS 24.

It includes protection designed to help resist cylinder snapping, a type of attack in which force is applied to the cylinder in an attempt to break it. If the cylinder is snapped, the remaining mechanism is designed to stay locked, while still allowing the door to be operated from inside.

These features add another layer of reassurance, although the security of your complete door also depends on its other components and how it is installed.

A £5,000 security guarantee

The security guarantee has also increased with the introduction of the new cylinder.

The previous cylinder came with a £2,000 guarantee, while the APECS AP V3 offers a £5,000 security guarantee.

To activate your guarantee, you’ll need to register your cylinder with APECS. Be sure to check the terms and conditions when registering so you know exactly what’s covered.

Cylinder options available to you

The APECS AP V3 is available in two configurations, depending on how you prefer to operate your door.

• Key / Key: A key is used to lock and unlock the door from both the outside and inside.
• Key / Thumbturn: A key operates the lock from outside, while an internal thumbturn allows you to operate it from inside without using a key.

Both options offer practical benefits. The best choice depends on your household's needs and how you want to manage access to your home.

How to care for your new locking cylinder?

Like any moving mechanism, your cylinder benefits from a little routine maintenance to help keep it working smoothly.

For the APECS AP V3, use a non-silicone-based lock lubricant every six months, following the cylinder manufacturer's instructions. Avoid oil-based sprays such as WD-40, as they can attract dust and debris and may affect the mechanism over time.

If your key starts to feel stiff or the cylinder becomes difficult to operate, check the APECS maintenance guidance rather than forcing the key or applying an unsuitable lubricant.
