Official blog of the leading composite door – Rockdoor
Thousands of properties across Lancashire benefit from the security of a Rockdoor composite door, but while the doors protect homes and businesses they can
also make it difficult to enable access in emergency situations. While acknowledging the high levels of safety and security against burglary that a Rockdoor affords (both front doors and back doors), Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service also identified the access issue challenging the emergency services.
Keen to assist, Rockdoor opened its Blackburn facility to the Service, allowing them to operate an ‘on-site’ training day. This enabled the firefighters to experience, at first hand, the specialist tools and force required to gain access through a Rockdoor, should the unlikely situation arise.
For this exercise, Rockdoor provided a rig containing 3 different doors, affording the firefighters valuable practice using new state-of-the-art cutting equipment and different entry techniques to gain access to the UKs strongest composite door. Rockdoor engineers were present throughout, providing technical information, expert advice and assisting the crews as required.
Group Manager Alan Walker of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service commented on this unusual move by the Service. “High-security doors intended to keep burglars out create a challenge too for firefighters with the legitimate reason for breaking in to rescue people. We’ll allow nothing to compromise our ability to rescue people without delay, so by approaching market leaders Rockdoor to help us devise entry techniques for firefighters but not for burglars, we knew we’d face no tougher challenge to get it right first time. A high-tech door required a high-tech approach, using a heavy-duty diamond-tipped blade in a power saw, something that a burglar would be unlikely to carry around with them, much less dare to wake the neighbourhood by using! We’re extremely pleased with the outcome and immensely grateful to Rockdoor for the use of their products, premises and company experts on hand.”
Simon Bird, GAP & Rockdoors Joint MD added, “When approached by Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service, our initial reaction was to question why we’d let anyone practice getting into a Rockdoor. After all we developed the door to be incredibly strong and virtually impossible to break in. However, we recognise the potential difficulties such a secure door could present in an emergency, and felt it was our obligation to accommodate and assist the Service as best we could. ”
Fire Service visit Rockdoor to put the UK’s leading composite door through its paces.
A recent news article published on the BBC news website has found that lock snapping ‘a technique used to snap a lock barrel in two to gain access to a home’ has accounted for a quarter of all burglaries in West Yorkshire since 2009.
Unfortunately this is not ‘new’ news in the replacement door industry, and has been a common reason many homeowners across the UK have upgraded their old uPVC doors to Rockdoor Composite Doors, which are now often ‘
asked for by name’.
Rockdoor composite door cylinders are rigorously tested to ensure they are anti snap, anti bump, anti drill and anti pick for the ultimate in composite door security. They are also safeguarded by reinforced Zinc cylinder guard protectors, to ensure the burglar has little or no chance of snapping a Rockdoor cylinder.
All Rockdoor composite door locks are produced by Winkhaus, the world’s leading lock manufacturer. All Winkhaus German engineered locks are approved by the Master Locksmith’s Association.
You can rest assured that all Rockdoor composite doors leaving our production facility are safe, strong and thermally efficient.

Once upon a time I was a highly desirable symbol of class, good taste and quality. Now I’m a shadow of my former self, unable to compete with the cutting edge technology of composite doors, which combine aesthetics as stunning as mine, with minimal maintenance, fuel efficiency and ultra security.
Elegant in my youth, I’m now shabby and self conscious, as I haven’t been given the TLC sanding and painting I need to rectify the fading, peeling, flaking, sticking, cracking and warping effects of weathering we wooden doors suffer from. I wish I could be reborn as a composite front door, and then I’d retain my stylish good looks and realistic wood grain appearance year after year, with just a low maintenance occasional bath in warm soapy water.
As a composite door, I could be white, black, red, blue, green, grey or even a natural wood shade, such as light oak or mahogany. Oh the possibilities… If I was a Rockdoor composite door I could even be a different colour on the inside and outside to complement both your internal décor and your windows and roofline.
It’s so cold in the winter too, especially during big freeze of recent years. If I was a composite door I’d have been manufactured with millimetre precision for a perfect fit so would be draught proofed. I’d also have an insulating foam core to make me six times more thermally efficient than I am as a wooden door. As a composite door you’d love me for lowering your energy bills by preventing heat escaping and the environment would love you for a minimised carbon footprint!
I also suffer from stranger danger. When I see visitors approaching I panic in case my locks let me down. If I was a Rockdoor composite door, I’d be fitted with a state of the art, multipoint locking system and live in a reinforced inner and outer frame for security peace of mind. Try as I might, I’m never going to beat a composite door to the title of most secure door on the market, especially as composite doors can be Keyed Alike. Keyed Alike means one key can conveniently open the front door and my back door and French Door siblings, to end the security risks of assorted keys which have the potential to go missing.
My pride was further dented when I realised how weak I am in comparison with a composite door. A composite door is similar in weight and width to me but whereas I am weakened when I contract and expand in hot and cold weather, a composite door remains stable throughout seasonal temperature changes and therefore retains its strength.
I accept defeat. As a traditional wooden door, I can’t compete with Rockdoor composite doors any more. With their ten year guarantee and ultimate combination of aesthetics and supreme functionality, please allow me to retire graciously and let composite doors lead the way.

Home burglar alarms are becoming a thing of the past, with more and more people regarding them as noise pollution rather than a burglar deterrent.
10 or 20 years ago, if an alarm was heard it would instantly result in neighbours checking the property, or calling the police to check front doors, back doors or windows haven’t been forced open by preying thieves.
Although 40% of homeowners have a burglar alarm, a survey by Zurich found a third of Britons ignore them thinking someone else will deal with it.
So, ask yourself the question, will a burglar alarm keep you safe and secure like a Rockdoor composite door could? The answer is probably not.
Investing in an ultra secure composite door, for both your front door and back door, is a great way of ensuring thieves cannot gain access to your property through an entrance door.

Composite door manufacturer Rockdoor are proud to have helped DIY S.O.S with their biggest project to date – a complete refurbishment of a community youth centre in Norris Green in Liverpool, in aid of Children in Need which was broadcast on the 10th November.
The community centre was originally an old boys club built over 50 years ago and resembles two dated aircraft hangers side by side. The site had little or no investment for many years until Liverpool Mutual Homes and many suppliers became involved to help Children in Need by refurbishing the entire building.
Rockdoor, in association with
Liverpool Mutual Homes, supplied DIY SOS 4 sets of composite Fire Doors and Escapes Doors to benefit the community centre making it safe and secure.
The transformation that took place in just 9 days astonished all the suppliers and local residents involved, and Rockdoor were glad to lend a helping in hand in the name of charity
In addition to supporting BBC’s 1 DIY SOS Children in Need special, Rockdoor and sister company GAP are encouraging all their 500 strong team at locations across the UK, to come to work on Friday in fancy dress to raise money for Children in Need.
